When we look at wells in the Old Testament in three times we can find the well as the place of meeting before marriage (Genesis 24, Genesis 29, and Exodus 4).
However, in our chapter there are 4 well and all of them are not in the functions as described above. 2 well are wells of fight between shepherds, as written:
“And the herdmen of Gerar did strive with Isaac’s herdmen, saying, The water is ours: and he called the name of the well Esek; because they strove with him. And they digged another well, and strove for that also: and he called the name of it Sitnah.
The third one is called Rehovot, the place that I was born, as written:
“And he removed from thence, and digged another well; and for that they strove not: and he called the name of it Rehoboth; and he said, for now the Lord hath made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land”(Genesis (26:22)
The fourth one is called Beersheba and many speculate that is related to the number seven (Sheba’) in Hebrew, but actually it’s related to the root to swear (Shin-Beit-‘ayin).The people there probably swore about peace that they want (See Genesis 26:31-33).
I wish we will all swear that peace should be with us!
Have a peaceful week, Eli
