A broken telephone (Telefon Shavour in Hebrew) is one of the favored games that kids like to play. In this game when someone is telling you something and you are saying to your friend, and he is saying to another friend, we can learn what happens to words that started on one side of the room as one idea and Genesis 39- What happened in the house of Potiphar?
When we look at Genesis 39 there are four stories that describe what happened in the house of Potiphar. The first can be found in verse 7-10; the second continues the first, but speak about a particular day that the wife of Potiphar tried as she has done to tempt Jospeh in verses 12; the third is what she said to the people of her house in verses 14-15; the fourth is what she said to her husband in verses 17-18.
Let’s examine the differences between the third story and the fourth, as written:
“She called out to her servants and said to them, “Look, he had to bring us a Hebrew to dally with us! This one came to lie with me; but I screamed loud. And when he heard me screaming at the top of my voice, he left his garment with me and got away and fled outside.”(Genesis 39:14-15)
“Then she told him the same story, saying, “The Hebrew slave whom you brought into our house came to me to dally with me; but when I screamed at the top of my voice, he left his garment with me and fled outside.” (Genesis 39:17-18)
When the wife of Potiphar spoke with the people of her house, she mentioned that this Hebrew man- that was brought by Potiphar -came to laugh at us and came to lie down with her. When she spoke with her husband the Hebrew man changed to Hebrew servant and he came to her in a sexual meaning in order to heart her.
Why do you think she changed her words?
